With interest around the UC Berkeley study published recently identifying several unnamed tampon brands contained toxic metals, we have been working with our manufacturers to provide an update.
This can be unsettling news and as a company founded on the purpose of providing feminine hygiene products that are a better option for both women and the planet, something we strive every day to do, we thought it necessary to reassure with the steps we take regarding our products.
Oi tampons are made with 100% organic cotton, certified organic to either the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS*) or the Organic Content Standard (OCS†), and BioGro‡ the New Zealand Organic Standard.
We are audited to these standards annually.
Our manufacturers conduct rigorous chemical analysis on raw materials focusing on potential contaminants such as heavy metals. The testing results confirm trace levels of chemicals found do not pose any health risks.
Oi does not add any other ingredients to our organic cotton tampons, such as scents, odor control and lubrication.
Furthermore, Oi has undertaken independent scientific research and can confirm no estrogenic bioactivity was detected in our tampons. This screening suggests no EDCs (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals) are present at levels sufficient to interfere with natural estrogen signaling.
We will continue to work closely with our manufacturers to understand if any improvements can be made and will continue to test our products and strive to bring the best possible products to market.
